Handgun Safety & Training Day for Criminal Justice Students

We recently offered our Junior and Senior Criminal Justice majors and minors at Georgia College & State University the opportunity to participate in a hands-on handgun safety and training experience. This was especially valuable for those who had never been around firearms before.

The day began in the classroom, where students learned about Georgia gun laws and the fundamentals of handgun safety and etiquette. Using mock guns, they practiced proper stance and grip before heading to the range after lunch.

At the range, students experienced live-fire exercises, gaining an understanding of recoil, sight alignment, and basic shooting technique. We ran drills designed to simulate what it's like to take a firearms evaluation during mandate training and wrapped up the day with some friendly shoot-off competitions.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this an impactful learning experience!

Our hearts are heavy following the tragic events in Columbia County, Georgia. On Saturday evening, Deputy Brandon Sikes was killed, and Deputy Gavin White critically injured during a traffic stop that turned deadly. The suspect opened fire with a fully automatic weapon as deputies attempted to serve a protective order. The suspect was later found deceased inside his motor home, which contained pipe bombs and additional firearms.

Deputy Sikes, a dedicated member of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office since 2018, is survived by his wife, who also serves in the agency. Deputy White is recovering after undergoing surgery.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of these brave officers. Their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. Let us keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

This morning, Col. Scott Deason had the pleasure of meeting with international students at GCSU, continuing his tradition of welcoming them to Baldwin County. Every year, Col. Deason takes the time to connect with these students, answer their questions, and make sure they feel supported as they settle into their new environment.
This year, Col. Deason had the honor of meeting Rodrigo Perez Crespo and Laura Almagro Gomez, both juniors from Spain who are also talented tennis players at GCSU. We are excited to have them join our community and are thrilled to see the unique contributions they will make here in Baldwin County.
Let’s give a warm welcome to Rodrigo and Laura as they embark on this exciting chapter of their journey!
